Since opening its doors in 1914, Morgan Jewelers has been making and selling fine jewelry for three generations. Nate Morgan Sr. came to the United States from Europe in 1900. He arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he started working in a local pawn shop. To pay for his lodging and board, Nate assisted the owner of the shop and oversaw the shipping of goods in and out of the store. Just one year after he arrived in the United States, Nate Morgan Sr. was promoted to store manager. 13 years later, Nate used most of his savings to open the first Morgan Jewelers with a partner in Pocatello, Idaho.
As business flourished, Nate remained steadfastly committed to providing a personal and professional service to customers – a tradition that continues to this day. He implemented a series of initiatives to meet customer demand, including hiring a watchmaker and a goldsmith.
During the 1920s, Pocatello experienced an economic boom thanks to the industrial advancements that were being made at the time. It also happened to be the main center for the Union Pacific Railroad. As the center’s only official watch timer, Morgan Jewelers was responsible for ensuring that the trains continued to run on time by calibrating all the railroad employee’s watches.
Nate went on to establish a unique arrangement whereby railroad workers could have the cost of the calibration subtracted from their paychecks. This allowed the workers to maintain their timepieces when the need arose, even if they were unable to pay for it at the time of service. This arrangement continued, with the railroad eventually approving the sale of other merchandise from the jewelry store with payments deducted directly from the employee payroll.
As the word spread among the railroad workers, the modest store was inundated with customers. Nate expanded the store to a larger location and started advertising his sales method to the general public. And thus, Morgan Jewelers became one of the first businesses in the western United States to offer merchandise with a financing option. The slogan on the sign outside the new store proudly read, ‘Nate Morgan Jewelers, Yours Today with Time to Pay’.
From the first Morgan’s jewelers humble beginnings, the business has since opened in more than 15 locations across the Rocky Mountain region, with headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. The range of offerings at Morgan Jewelers has also expanded, now including Repair and Warranty plans, Jewelry Care, and Jewel School.
