Black Hills Gold is a type of gold manufactured in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. It is a unique American art form that still uses the tools and techniques from the way it was originally made – by hand.
It dates back to the 1870s Black Hills Gold Rush, when the French goldsmith Henri LeBeau arrived in the region, hoping to strike gold.
The story goes that LeBeau, who was unfamiliar with the lay of the land, lost his way in the Black Hills wilderness. Faint from hunger and exhaustion, LeBeau collapsed and dreamed of the lush vineyards of his home country. Upon waking, LeBeau stumbled across some native South Dakotan grape vines growing along the edge of a creek. LeBeau’s life was saved and the legend was born.
LeBeau’s fortuitous discovery led him to craft gold ‘good luck’ jewelry featuring a grape leaf motif. The design quickly became popular among other prospectors hoping to strike it lucky and LeBeau’s jewelry soon became known as Black Hills Gold.
Today, the distinct grape leaf pattern is instantly recognizable and will no doubt continue to be cherished for many generations to come.
